My teaching methods are individually tailored to the student's needs and abilities. For young students and/or for those with less voice experience, I like to combine the basics of singing along with musicianship skills to set the student up for success, incorporating lots of fun to keep the young students interested in practice and lessons. For more experienced students, I like to start with warmups and exercises that are designed to set the student up for success in repertoire, and then finish the lesson working through repertoire specifically working through challenging areas of each piece and finding an emotional connection to each piece once ideal technique is established. I believe regular practice and getting as much experience as you can in various styles is key. I never restricted myself to one style of music, and if you don't want to, you don't have to. I did musical theater shows, but also performed in classical choirs and church choirs, teaching me various types of musical styles. I can teach classical music and technicality, to jazz songs and improvisation, to songwriting and pop/folk oriented style of playing. I create my own lesson plans based off of the individual student. For voice students, we usually warm up, do technical exercises working on varying registers and techniques, and then work on repertoire. I often find the passages in a particular song that the student is struggling with and focus in on those, finding exercises to guide the student. My favorite teaching experience is when I took on a nine-year-old piano student who had never written a song, and wouldn’t practice to save his life. I found that getting him to write a piece of music that was entirely his own helped him to practice his technique in a way that was fun and creatively satisfying. His first composition went on to win a county-wide award for best original song. Read More
