During the first lesson I have the student sing (if it is a vocal lesson) their favorite song so I can hear them. After that i use my keyboard and take the student through some excersizes to really home in on that range. I listen for qualities and we discuss the positives and what improvements are needed. For beginner students I start with the basic for both piano and voice. For voice we start with breathing, pitch, and starting a healthy techinque and proper places to sing from. For piano I follow the Alfred's serious and begin with music theory as well. Once my students advance we begin with new solo repertoire and more advance theory and sight reading. I have my Bachelor of Music in Voice with a focus in Music Education/Choral Conducting, and a Master of Music in Voice Performance. During these degrees, I studied vocal pedagogy extensively and began my private studio. I fully believe in the philosophy of hard work. I keep it light and simple. In lessons, I am a listener as well as a teacher. I use the students own words to work through music. I encourage students to focus on what things feel like, and describe them, so that we can focus on what is working well! I hated school when I was younger. I will never let my lessons feel like school. We work at each individual students pace. Once warm-ups and whatever key technique we are talking about that day are covered the lesson turns more into an educationally structured band practice. My students know they can let go and just sing. If something needs to be worked on, we work on it, and I will give notes and how to fix things throughout. Read More
