It has taken me many years to actually say that with full confidence, but when I consider the joy I experience while teaching, and also look at the growth and improvement my students experience throughout their time with me, it is really clear: this is what I love, and this is what I have a unique gifting to do. The method book I begin younger students on is Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber. There are 5 Level books to complete. We use the lesson book, as well as the technique book. I also supplement with solo repertoire and various materials. For the older beginner, I use Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Course, as well as supplemental solo repertoire. I love to see my students grow and develop a deeper passion for music. It is important that the student makes progress at his or her own pace. I encourage setting realistic goals in their practice and in our lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps keep the student motivated to become a better musician, and makes students eager to learn more. That being said, goals that we set are to be realistic and achievable. Difficult enough to keep them interested but easy enough to keep them from giving up. With each lesson we will discuss both goals and expectations. Afterwards we will begin with warm-ups that are tailored to each student's skill level: For my beginner students we will warm up with basic music reading. I was also able to cadet teach second grade music for my entire senior year. On top of the education classes that I was required to take in college, I began taking on a couple of voice students to jump start my career as a music teacher. I now teach fifth grade general music and I enjoy every second of it. I believe that learning should be fun and motivating in order to be successful and that is the biggest output that I would like for my voice students. Read More
