For beginning piano students who are children, I use Piano Adventures books. I also mix it with songs they might like and I can adapt to their level. I encourage my piano young students to sing a bit too. For adults who want to learn how to comp in the piano while they sing, I teach chord theory and rhythm patters, also sight reading if they are interested. For small children, I like to teach from the same book I first learned how to play guitar from. But, for older students, I like to base our lessons on their interests. Generally, I will ask a student if there is a song they really like. If so, we will learn the song by ear, or by sheet music for those interested, and break down all of its pieces.
