After teaching for 12 years I don't have a fixed method. I have categories of students, from children who are trying to function in a band setting, to children who are trying to develop a musical or compositional talent. I take particular joy in teaching adults who believe it is too late to achieve levels of technical proficiency that would make them proud. My journey from classical music to jazz through pop, swing, rock, soul and folk has taught me how to blend in with any style, and my classical education has given me the necessary toolbox to communicate about advanced theoretical concepts with students who are interested. Piano: I typically teach out of Fabre's piano adventures series. this establishes technique, aural skills, sight-reading skills, and then I'll add on my own exercises for compositional skills and improvisational skills. I am flexible to work outside of the books as well, and to learn songs and material that might be outside of the book. I also recognize that every student is different and will cater the material and course of study to the individual (based on a mix of my observations, what the students communicated goals are, and what the parents communicated goals are) above all of this, my main goal is to spark and maintain the excitement for making music! I love music and love teaching the fundamentals of singing. Along with my background as an English Teacher, I'm able to help students with diction and breath control with singing. I come from a family of wedding singers but my love of performance came from joining a capella groups. I love collaboration and using the voice to create sounds.
