I wanted my students to be curious, constantly learning. I wanted them to know that I also was a learner. I play piano, but also Hammond and pipe organ, trumpet, flute, and accordion. In my choirs students learned how to use band instruments in the choir. I arranged the parts or allowed them to use their creativity. I base my teaching on that, within the framework of standard music teaching practices. Throughout the process of the student's learning, I periodically assess, not only the student's progress, but also the student's satisfaction with their learning process. Typically, I begin with regimented learning. For guitar students, I use Hal Leonards Guitar Method 1. For voice students, I teach basic breathing exercises and fun, sustainable and memorable warm-ups. From there, I begin to prep them for their first solo performances. I offer studio-wide performance opportunities for new and experienced students to show off their skills! As they progress, I teach to their interests and needs. For beginner guitar students I use Mel Bays You Can Teach Yourself guitar . I emphasize chords and technique and playing melodies. For piano students I teach students first to listen and immitate and then read. Once they master some basics in reading music I introduce chords. My vocal students start each lesson with warmups and apply the techniques to the songs that they are learning.
