My name is Kelly, I am new to the Nashville Area as of this past May! I have been playing the cello for 15 years and recently graduated from West Chester University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education. I am passionate about music, and enjoy all different genres. I have experience playing with a symphony orchestra, chamber ensemble, baroque ensemble, cello ensemble, and various trios and quartets. I have been teaching over the last 4.5 years, either in my home, traveling, or online, and as well as for a jazz academy. Teaching has shown me that I can inspire my students to enjoy what they are learning, even if it gets hard. It is all worth the practice! I love to see my students succeed and want them to desire to continue play music. I also want to see them having fun during their lessons and be able to motivate them to have fun even while practicing at home. Read More

Although my methods vary a bit depending on the instrument, the general plan is the same. For beginner students of instruments I focus first on fundamentals, such as finger placement, note names, what makes up chords so forth (again with a high emphasis on practice). I will gladly print out hard copies of chord sheets, note names, songs with chord markers if desired, or can display these digitally! For beginner students of voice, I start by teaching proper breathing, different parts of the voice, warm ups, and assessing the students vocal range. Read More

The method used for teaching a student how to enjoy music should be practical, intuitive, and natural. I begin by training a student how to listen (in the same way that a child would hear words before he could speak). From that point, a student learns to "speak" or play musical sentences. Finally, the reading skills are developed. Through this approach, musical literacy is founded and then the art of mastering the instrument begins by developing sensitivity and fine musicianship. My number 1 goal as an instructor is to assess the needs and goals of the student, and to assist the student in reaching these goals while fostering a fun environment. Nothing is more important than finding your own personal passion, and making sure that your pursuit of your goals remains an enjoyable process. I know that studying music takes years of dedication and steady practice, so I work hard to find songs and styles that suit the student. Read More

For beginner students, we start off using the beginning books from "Piano Adventures" by Faber Faber, and published by Hal Leonard. They learn to read music, improvise, music theory, and play all style of music. A typical lesson for an elementary school student would be 10 min of playing assigned pieces that they've practiced for the week, 10 min of new songs for the next week, 5 min of music theory, and 5 min of some sort of musical game.
