An Effective Teacher Needs to Practice What They Preach. A good educator must first have mastered their art and studied the principles underlying human development to fully understand how to teach someone the art of music. This goes far beyond replicating your musical history, or relaying what you think was the right path when you first learnt music. An Effective Teacher Needs To Stay Up To Date I try to stay up to date on the latest teaching resources and methodology An Effective Teacher Needs To Engage Their Students Hence, be open and willing to learn and teach new repertoire which engages your students. I always approach teaching on an individual basis. I find out what the student loves about music, and what made him or her want to learn in the first place. We set realistic goals for pace and have fun. I often mix traditional work with fun work. For example, alongside conventional ways to learn melody and harmony, I'll tie those lessons into specific songs or pieces of music that the student likes, to show the relevance of the material and the importance it has, at the same time keeping the student interested. My teaching style isopen-minded, enriched with kind, positive words, and based on clarity. I find that the best teaching style is one that anticipates the student's needs and guides him or her on a stable, rigorous, and inspiring musical journey. The goal is to build a fearless, fun-loving, and mature student of the arts who is confident in his or her ability. I have developed specific techniques to deal with performance anxiety, physical limitations, and common musical challenges. Read More

Although my methods vary a bit depending on the instrument, the general plan is the same. For beginner students of instruments I focus first on fundamentals, such as finger placement, note names, what makes up chords so forth (again with a high emphasis on practice). I will gladly print out hard copies of chord sheets, note names, songs with chord markers if desired, or can display these digitally! For beginner students of voice, I start by teaching proper breathing, different parts of the voice, warm ups, and assessing the students vocal range. Read More

I will pass on the warmup methods that I was trained to do from my professors at Berklee and Manhattan School of Music. We will also go over the difference between practicing and jamming and how to do both in between lessons for I believe they are both important for vocal development for different reasons. I will keep an astute eye and ear on elements such as breath management, intonation, tone quality, phrasing, diction, expression, interpretation, stage presence, preparation, musicianship, and last but not least, attitude. For beginning students I generally use the Suzuki books and have had some training in the method. I don't use a strict Suzuki method but combine it with a more traditional approach by including note reading, scales, etc. I also use the Faber books in conjunction with the Suzuki for piano. For adults I generally give them the option of choosing the music they would like to learn and then try to incorporate some of the technical elements by using scales and Hanon exercises. Read More

Practice makes permanent. It doesn't always make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect, and therefore I encourage students to always make consistent time to practice and perfect their craft. Consistent practice with good technique and attention to detail is better than hours and hours of lazy, uninspired practice. Therefore, I try to set new challenges each week that are fresh and exciting which encourage active, perfect practice. I want to make sure students are eager to learn, so I employ teaching techniques that make learning fun. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
