I start with students by asking them what they want to accomplish on whatever instrument we're working on, and that will change the way the lessons progress. After the basics, if they want to study classical music, contemporary, or just strengthen the basic skills they have, then we progress from there. This could mean sticking to Hal Leonard books, learning songs, diving deeply into theory, or understanding the world of improvisation. Read More

I've been teaching guitar for the past four years and drums for 10. My favorite thing about teaching is when a student gets to a playing level they didn't think possible. Seeing the transformation is the most rewarding part of the job for me, because I know first hand how good it feels to improve and progress. To see that same sense of acomplishment in others makes me happy because I know the lessons and skills learned are life long and invaluable. Read More

For elementary school-aged students and younger who are just starting out, I will typically see if the student is familiar with, and a fan of, any classic or contemporary pop or rock music. Practice makes permanent. It doesn't always make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect, and therefore I encourage students to always make consistent time to practice and perfect their craft. Consistent practice with good technique and attention to detail is better than hours and hours of lazy, uninspired practice. Therefore, I try to set new challenges each week that are fresh and exciting which encourage active, perfect practice. I want to make sure students are eager to learn, so I employ teaching techniques that make learning fun. Read More

At the beginning of my experience with each student, I assess what the goals are for each student/their family, in the musical learning process. I base my teaching on that, within the framework of standard music teaching practices. Throughout the process of the student's learning, I periodically assess, not only the student's progress, but also the student's satisfaction with their learning process. As the need arises, I will make modifications or changes to the teaching, which better suit the student. Read More
