I do make sure to encourage all of my students to practice as it does help make you a better musician, but perfection is never the goal. With the addition to encouraging individual practice skills, I find it key to ask parents to partake in their child's practice skills, as well. I like to know what activities other than music they enjoy, what their favorite/least favorite subject is in school, what they want to be when they grow up, what motivates them and what doesn't.
