I have had many students and it's so much fun to watch them learn and grow and find out that everyone has a voice and is capable of singing. For most students, I typically start with breathing exercises and warm ups to learn the student's voice. I would ask for the student to prepare a song of their choice and we would typically spend a few lessons learning the fundamentals and engaging in proper technique. I come from a deep musical heritage and chose the trombone as my main instrument for spiritual reasons. While attending Los Angeles County High School for The Arts, I studied with jazz and trombone legends. Since moving to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music, I've been studying with masters from many different disciplines. For beginning students, I always start by learning the notes on the staff that corresponds with their specific instrument. Knowledge and confidence of this is crucial to the learning process. Next, I pick a method book to work through to learn the fundamentals. For trombone, I use Rubank's "Elementary Method."
