One of the things I love most is the shock of parents and students who expect that either they themselves are going to dread the lessons or practice session or that their child will give up and hate practicing. My voice students ranged from young beginning singers just learning the basics of singing to seniors in undergrad preparing large roles. For all students, I begin with classical fundamentals such as body alignment, breath support, and resonance and moving to topics including diction, vocal health, interpretation, and stage presence. I will work with the student to find repertoire that will best fit their voice, help achieve their musical goals, and be aligned with what they enjoy musically. When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. In 2011, I graduated from Morehead State University with a Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance and in 2014, I graduated from the University of Louisville with a Masters degree in Vocal Performance.
