 I have been teaching in the Columbus area for 14 years.  I have studied piano and voice for 30 years performing and had experience auditioning for and performing in musical theater, opera, and contemporary settings. After earning my degree from otterbein, I have maintained a studio of 25-30 students in the westerville/New Albany area.  I currently reside with my husband and three children, three dogs, and a cat in New Albany where we run one location of my studios. Positive reinforcement is the most important tool any teacher can have in their arsonal, and I try to praise my students every time I notice imporvements and support and assure them when confronted with difficulties. I privately studied flute under Ms. Sarah Tuck co-principal flautist of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra for two years. My professional career began when I entered into the United States Marine Corps as a flautist. I was stationed at Cherry Point and Camp LeJeune Marine Corps Bands. Music fundamentals are most important in the beginning stages. When teaching kids I really focus on posture, breath, building repertoire, and technique. For adults, I start by finding out if they are adult beginner, or adult intermediate, depending on the knowledge of singing and technique. When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. This can be traditional sheet music, pop chords, or adapted notation that may consist of numbers, letters, and/or colors. Read More
