I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. For 3-5 year olds on piano I use Wunderkeys and supplement with Bastien Music Tree and music I have written when note reading is introduced. Usually I continue into Faber and Faber but Wunderkeys is adding more method books for beginners 5+ and I may start using that once it is available for purchase. I start with the basics and for young students do nursery rhymes and songs they know,this makes it more enjoyable for them. I also ask them what music they would be interested in learning and see if I can find an easy version of this.
