My students cover a wide range, from bluegrass to concert classical. The correct technique is, in my experience, the one that will be able to underlay any musical style. For example, if the left hand is flexible and well-formed, then blues, Bach and flamenco all will come more easily. This core is essential, because even at the most beginning stages, the student should be able to play with musical expression. Books I commonly use are Suzuki, Parkening, and Essential Elements--but I equally commonly use other materials, depending on the student's interest.

A creative and educational learning environment is a place where students can feel safe, secure, and successful.  An educator’s aspiration is for their students to pass through their classroom and to leave with a successful learning experience.  My only wish is for students to leave with a deeper understanding and an appreciation for learning music.

I have mentored young violinists and coached chamber music ensembles since 2006. For the past three years, I have taught in-home private lessons, with ages ranging from 3 to 60. I teach violin and viola at the Third Street Music School Settlement, and in the spring of 2014 was the violin instructor at P.S. 278 in Inwood.

I like to make sure my students know exactly what they're about to play when trying to learn the violin. I am very big on making sure my students understand basic theory and the correct posture of holding the violin and bow. The better the posture and how well you know and understand your theory, the better you'll play.

For violin teaching, I am a staunch Suzuki supporter. I believe the method can truly bring out a great musician in every child if it's taught properly. I teach note reading very early on, but ear training is key to sensitive musicianship. I also supplement with pieces outside the Suzuki curriculum, encouraging my students to choose pieces that catch their interest. For piano, I have experience with all of the popular methods -- Faber, Alfred, Bastien, etc. It's important to me that students recognize notes and intervals from a very early level, and I find this is best taught through songs and pieces the student already recognizes. Although most of the methods provide familiar tunes, I find I need to supplement; to do this, I encourage students to find familiar pieces, within their level, that they enjoy. Many times that includes Top 40 tunes, but some choose classical or folk tunes.
