I started teaching violin from the age of 20 privately and in recent years I have had experience of group teaching both in schools and animating Gypsy violin seminars. I like equally to guide the approach of young musicians to the instrument, and the improvement of advanced students. Given my experience in the field of folk and ethnic music i believe that have fun is a central part in learning music at any age. Read More

I have been teaching in both private studio and public schools since 2012 from K-12, high schools and college levels. I like sharing my passion for music to students that are willing to learn and enjoy the same love for music. I would first begin with scales and just focus on getting the correct hand placements. After maybe one or two lessons with focusing on scales, we will then begin with Suzuki books. These books are great for getting the kids more familiar with music and also put their scale practicing to the test. Of course, the scales will still be continued however as the student progresses, we will focus less on scales and put our attention more on various classical music pieces. Read More

Each student learns at their own pace and it's important to understand that not everybody learns the same. Setting both short and long term goals with the student helps me understand what they want out of lessons. This makes it easier for me to engage with them and bring it back to something relevant to them at the end of the day. For example, no child understands advanced rhythm unless you disguise it in familiar terms e.g. using the phrase "run po-ny run" to describe two eighth notes sandwiched in between to quarter notes. I teach mainly out of the string builder series. After the student shows some progress I will introduce some solo pieces and maybe some studies to practice. My method really revolves around the student since everyone advances at their own pace. Some other method books could be Kreutzer, Sevcik, and wohlfhart. Some early pieces I could introduce would be Arcangelos Corelli's violin sonatas. Read More

...the keys are placed the same distance apart until you reach the bottom of the circle with the key signature of F#.   The Right Side of The Circle   The right side of the circle is the side with sharped key signatures. Starting with the key of G, every next key signature will add a sharp while retaining the other one(s) from the previous key. Every new sharp will be added to the key’s leading tone, which is the note located on the seventh scale degree. For example, the notes that form the key of G major are G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G, and a sharp was added to the F note.... Read More

Vocal Exercises for Singers: Breathing and Beginner Exercises

...Even the most novice of singers are familiar with a certain number of warm-ups and vocal exercises for singers, whether these exercises come from taking a few voice lessons, taking choir in school, or watching an instructional YouTube video. While the vast majority of voice teachers and choir directors use vocal exercises during their teaching sessions, I’ve found that instructors often forget to explain the purpose of doing these repetitive and even silly-sounding vocalizes. Vocal exercises are essential to any singer’s development and, if done correctly, will accomplish the following goals:   A warmed up voice ready to healthfully sing ... Read More

Jazz Scales: The Altered Scale

...dissonance, etc. Consonance vs. dissonance is the most effective way to develop harmonic “tension and release”. For the specific purpose of this article, we’ll focus on harmonic “tension and release”. The most common place to use harmonic “tension and release” in music is on the V7-I resolution. The dominant chord is often used as a platform for dissonance before it resolves to the consonant tonic chord. In other words, the dominant chord is the “tension” and the tonic chord is the “release”. How do we accomplish this? I hinted at it in the past couple of articles I wrote on scales. The dominant chord can be ... Read More

Cremona Violins: Innovative and Artistic Instruments

...1737, we can tell that this artist didn’t let age slow down his skills. Stradivarius is believed to have perfected the modelling and reshaping of the violin that Andrea Amati started back in the 1500s. Stradivarius’s instrument designs varied over time – he changed the type of varnish, the styling of the bridge, and the proportions of the violin body, for example. But his later Cremona violins are generally thought to be his best, and these are the instruments upon which many modern violins are designed.   How the Secret Vanished What made Stradivarius’s violins so good? For many years, it ... Read More

Best Age to Start Bass Guitar Lessons

...24 inches in a short-scale model). Along with size, the next issue to consider is the child’s physicality; they need sufficient dexterity in their fingers to successfully play chords. We typically recommend starting bass around age eight or nine, compared to six or seven for guitar. This later age is suggested because the bass has heavier strings and a longer neck, making it difficult for younger students. There are exceptions to this rule: a physically smaller nine year old may not be ready for the bass, while a seven year old who is tall for their age may be fully equipped to play. The bass is a perfect instrument for young adolescents, and our instructors are able to work with all ages. ... Read More
