Once the student has a clear understanding of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire and etudes. To make the lesson more engaging, I am flexible in regard to choosing music pieces that a student may want to learn or not. I usually ask a student if they have a piece they would like to learn. If yes, then I will teach that piece for my student. If not, then I can find pieces to get the student interested in learning. Read More

I employ a very eclectic, rotating repetoire. For beginning violin students, I use the Suzuki method of ear-training, however I am not married to that curriculum. I prefer to use beginning Suzuki materials in tandem with standard American folk and pop music, in accordance to the student's interests. I am qualified to teach all the way through Suzuki book 10 if the student prefers a more classical approach. Ear training is fundamental in my approach to all instruments and styles. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. Therefore, it is important that each student progress at his or her own pace. It is essential to set a realistic course for my students at each lesson. Each lesson begins with a by review of the prior assignments and at that time I provide constructive ideas for improvement. I find it very important to encourage each student and acknowledge each challenge met. Read More

I think both should know upfront what the expectations should be, such as how long they will practice, what proper progress and growth looks like, as well as what they need from me to help them succeed. More than anything, I want to help my students grow their love for music in any way I can, and that might be different for everyone but that should be the priority. Read More

When I began my Master's degree in composition at the University of New Mexico, I concurrently worked as a private tutor for violin, music theory, and composition. I ultimately proceeded with my doctoral work in composition, first at UCLA, where I won two composition competitions in two consecutive years, and then completed at Claremont Graduate University, where I was awarded a DMA degree in composition. My life during all these years has been devoted to music as a instructor of the violin, composition, and music theory while also composing music for myself. Read More

I began playing the violin and piano when I was 4 years old. My mother was a piano teacher for over 30 years with contagious passion for music and her students, so with training in perfect pitch, sight-reading, and other musicianship skills, I began performing solo and in ensembles. I soon became an assistant teacher, beginning my own private lessons. Since elementary school, I've been a part of the church choir, school band, and orchestra. Read More
