For beginning cello students of all ages, I normally use one of my teacher's method books: Cellocity by Helga Winold of Indiana University. As my cello students progress, I slowly introduce smaller pieces that can normally be found in Suzuki method books. After my cello students have advanced significantly, I begin to introduce more complex pieces that are found in the standard cello repertoire. Eventually, my students reach a level where they gain the ability to gauge their experience level and select their own pieces with my approval. Read More

I am partial to Samuel Applebaum's methods: For young beginners, I like tto begin with the String Builder series; then, to improve upon understanding of key signatures, move on to Scales for Strings. Similarly, I'm also a fan of Suzuki, although I am not entirely limited to those two. And, of course recital and performance pieces are a must, preferably of the students's choosing - usually students already have something in mind that they want to learn! Read More

In addition, I play & teach old time fiddle tunes like Arkansas Traveler, Soldier's Joy, & Ragtime Annie, and Bluegrass songs/instrumentals. I also teach a variety of just nice, popular songs like Auld Land Syne. America the Beautiful, Jingle Bells, & You Are My Sunshine. All of this includes keys, chords, scales, and theory. One IMPORTANT & UNIQUE feature of my lessons is my 4 color CHARTS which ever student can have. They are not necessary for the learning process, but they make it easy to relearn song/tunes much later if the musician has forgotten them. Read More

I begin with developing sheet music literacy in my students right off the bat if they have no experience in reading music. I believe music literacy is one of the most important aspects of learning an instrument. I've always said, "not being able to read sheet music is like trying to be a writer who can't read, it makes no sense". I also begin with teaching proper form. Meaning how to hold the instrument and how to use proper technique. Read More

I grew up in a musical family. My mother is a professional violinist and teacher and all of my sisters and brother and I learned to play various instruments from a very early age. My mother and father sacrificed a lot for their children to have music lessons as they are quite expensive for the lower middle class family But they believed it was worth it as music lessons boost brain power and help with the development of fine motor skills and mathematics, even speech. Lauderdale, FL I taught K-6 elementary music classes and also private lessons. In Largo, Florida I taught at the School of Performing Arts. I am extemely qualified to teach with a warm and caring approach. One year I volunteered to teach violin in a YMCA string program to disadvantaged students. The highlight of my career was being part of a professional "Broadway quality" orchestra and putting on 19 performances in a row for a televised Christmas Extravaganza in Ft. Read More
