In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music. My main goal in a lesson is to build the fundamentals and branch out from that basic understanding of the instrument. In any form of music, especially classical, a musician must have a firm understanding of the basics in order to excel in their musical future. I began teaching privately in college in 2000. Since then I have maintained a studio of students in my home and in their homes. I believe focused, goal-specific practice sessions are key to developing a love for music and one's on instrument. Many of my students have earned superiors at state festivals and have won music scholarships to various schools. I strive to have each student develop individual goals for themselves and their musical experiences; whether it be simply getting better for the love of playing, or striving to perfect their skills to excel at various auditions. So I like to make sure that I'm always challenging them but never pushing them too hard, helping them get better at their own pace. At the end of each lesson I like to send students with a sheet having their required and suggested practice materials for the next lesson.
