For beginning students, my primary resource is generally the purple Primer level Faber book, however I often use principles of teaching from Simply Music and Piano Safari that allow beginning students to get right into playing some very interesting songs without having to read them. I think reading is important, don't get me wrong. However, I think that the ability to be versatile on the sounds of the piano without the abstraction of music notes can be very helpful for fostering a love for music early on. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

The tools and tricks of the trade: with me, you gain help understanding the musical alphabet forward and backward. You will spend your first few sessions actually writing more than doing, as you cannot drive a car unless we teach you how to DRIVE. Right!? We can use your materials, we can get some you think you'd enjoy, or we can use mine. I always start by assessing your level of performance, then adding to that until we achieve the level you so desire. Read More

I have taught private lessons to all ages since High School and this is where I feel like I thrive as an educator. I have coached for Harmony Project, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles and many others, as well as Drum and Bugle Corps and Marching bands throughout California. I have been the band director and general music educator for several elementary schools in the Bay Area and Los Angeles County Throughout the pandemic, I worked as Program Director for the Sacramento Mandarins, a nonprofit music academy with the mission of transforming the lives of youth through performing arts. Each student is unique and requires a customized approach to realize their goals. I don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach to students where they all play the same exercises, etudes, etc. I help students find what works for them, often times we create our own methods or modify existing ones to suit the needs of the pupil. I believe a solid foundation in the fundamentals of music can be very helpful, familiarity with music theory/terminology/notation. Read More

Through many years of teaching, I have found that being positive is the most effective way to help students succeed. Students should look forward to coming to their music lessons and thoroughly enjoy playing their instrument. I always try to avoid focusing on what a student is doing wrong, but instead point out ways to improve. If a student has the confidence and dedication to succeed, they are more than likely to do just that. Read More

I Try to get away from mechanism without joy. Everything has to be close to the music. Exercises to be actually doing them with a rhythm and time. Other than doing things musically, practicing in different times and intentions help a lot for the student to be open to play songs in different ways. Technique and theory are necessary tools. To apply concepts musically they need to do it with musical taste. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
