Fun but tough. I can tell when a learner hasn't practiced, and it affects the lesson and growth. I always try to make sure that the learner ends the lesson feeling accomplished. Read More

I use a number of method books depending upon the proficiency of the student. If I am staring an elementary student from scratch who is not involved in a school band program I like to use Claude Gordon's "Physical Aproach to Elementary Brass Playing." For middle school through college level players I use the same list of materials, but introduce them in stages as the student progresses though their development. Read More

For beginner students in fourth grade or above, I like to work with the method book that their school district uses. Most districts use Essential Elements from Hal Leonard or Standards of Excellence. If the student is also a beginner at reading music, we will focus on music fundamentals and basic theory to build their notation reading skills. I like to integrate songs the students choose, whether it be from a movie or a pop song, to not only reinforce their techniques, but to get the student excited about practicing and performing music. I aim to teach my students the difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music" and how this distinction is applied to practice. "Playing the trumpet" is a physically demanding task that requires diligent, often tedious practice to become skilled at. I have been teaching many years now. I have been a faculty member at Richard Stockton University since 2008 where I teach private trumpet lessons and coach a small Jazz ensemble. I have also taught at University of Pennsylvania and Swarthmore College. In addition, I taught for many years at Hambros House of Music in south jersey where I taught mostly beginners how to play the trumpet. Read More

After graduating college, I was the resident trumpet at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia, before completing three contracts as a show band musician on board Celebrity Cruise ships. I have toured Europe with my university's top jazz ensemble, as well as toured the United States with two different professional drum corps, Carolina Crown and Jersey Surf. I have taught at summer camps and after school programs, and I just love to share my love of music with others. Read More

Lessons are tailored to each individual. My teaching methods include a warm-up routine, scales, and etudes or songs from various method books, depending on the skill level of the student. Standard repertoire in classical and jazz studies is also covered. Sight-reading, improvisation, and ear-training are also a part of most lessons. Material that is time-sensitive for the student, such as school music (band/orchestra) as well as seating test/audition music is given top priority. Read More
