Throughout my life I have been an active member of bands, choirs, and drama. In high school I was a part of every ensemble available including the Lockport Marching Porters, jazz bands, pep bands, and the top group the Wind Symphony for three years. Simultaneously all four years I participated in every choir I could, as well as the spring musicals, often with lead roles. In college I was part of the Wind Symphony, Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Bands, the Marching Illini: Baritone Squad-Leader, British Brass Band, Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble/quartets, and the Varsity Mens Glee Club chorus. I always try to encourage students to see the small victories in playing music; regardless of how significant or noticeable an achievement is. Many students get down on themselves because they can't play something or they make a mistake. This is a deficit mindset that stunts growth long term. When I first teach a student I want them to set a short term goal between each lesson and one long term goal that spans from a month to a year. Read More

Different personality types call for different styles of teaching. Some students prefer to lead the way and create their own agendas while other students prefer to have the instructor lead. I love to discuss learning preferences with students to guarantee that they are receiving the preferred style of education. With children, I like to let them "lead the way" while I continuously steer them in the right direction. It keeps them engaged during the lesson and may inspire them to take charge and practice at home. Read More
