I have been part of many musical ensembles (in many genres) in my 30 year career and have session work that's currently located in the Seattle Rock Roll museum. Finding what a student is interested in and using that as a starting point is a part of my teaching approach. At the same time, there are some things that are critical to be taught at every level that should be incorporated on some level so there's a holistic and balanced education. Different personality types call for different styles of teaching. Some students prefer to lead the way and create their own agendas while other students prefer to have the instructor lead. I love to discuss learning preferences with students to guarantee that they are receiving the preferred style of education. With children, I like to let them "lead the way" while I continuously steer them in the right direction. With each newer levels and adding a new subject to talk about, that will be applied. I started teaching privately as a volunteer in my beginning years of high school, which involved being a mentor for beginning level 5th grade trumpet players just starting their instrument. As I began teaching beginners, my experience ended up expanding to teaching middle and high school students of various levels, from beginner to advanced intermediate.
