Beginning students will start out with technique practices, while introducing solo literature when appropriate. Technique studies can always be improved and studied, no matter a student's age or proficiency. I try to work within the repertoire a student is interested in at first, then expanding to materials and genres the student may find interesting to help broaden the experience and knowledge a student can gain from our lessons. My favorite part about teaching, is the idea of passing my knowledge on, and making sure that the student knows that he or she can accomplish anything with the right tools. I am thankful that my teachers have helped me reach a high level and play in amazing wind ensembles and orchestras, and I hope to give my students opportunities to do the same with my guidance. The methods I use are dependent on the ability level of each particular student. For beginning students, they usually have books given to them (i.e. Essential elements) by their band director at school - which is a fantastic way to start. I think it really depends on the needs of each individual player. I have experience teaching with Standards of Excellence as well as Essential Elements, though I am very open to crafting an individualized curricula for students. When planning lessons, I aim to provide students with 1) music to practice from a variety of genres and styles, 2) music that will challenge them in a variety of ways, and 3) creating/composing exercises and etudes that will help the student focus on particular weaknesses in their playing (I have often used music notation software to create individualized etudes for students).
