Whether the student is only first establishing these skills, or seeking further development, I incorporate many finger exercises, scales and etudes in the teaching of technique. I find it necessary to go over with a student (especially a beginning student) how to practice the material on their own. Most students are not taught how to practice, which is the only way to improve. Teaching a student how to work through difficult rhythms is never overlooked. Read More

In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. I also allow students to bring in music that interests them from solo material and pieces of music from band class. My first teaching experience was in 2009 as a music tutor at Schenectady County Community College where I helped students with music theory and ear training while earning my Associates degree in music. Also at this time I began teaching private students the electric bass guitar. At SUNY Fredonia I began teaching double bass lessons to non-music majors focusing equally on classical, jazz, and folk traditions. Since then I have worked at Peabody as a Graduate Teaching Fellow and was part of the Junior Bach outreach program, learningto teach music theory, ear training, analyisis, musicianship, and composition, including the use of notation software like Sibelius. As an instructor, my job is to give the student every opportunity possible to discover their passion for music. The first lesson is always about providing a safe relaxed tone and finding out where that student's progress is. Not establishing an accurate assessment of their progress can be very destructive because it could cause me to come off as either too demanding or condescending.
