In the summer of 2022, he served as an artist fellow in the Atlantic Music Festival, giving varied performances in orchestral, chamber and solo settings. To fuse his dedication to performance with his interest in academic research, Tommy also presented a full lecture recital in the recent conference on cultural assimilation in music hosted by the University of Calgary. I am an outgoing, creative, and passionate individual seeking to advance and utilize the arts, education, and culture, mainly to ameliorate the issues facing disadvantaged communities. I am currently living and working in Boston. From 2020 to 2024 I taught general music with Open Door Art, an affiliate of the Seven Hills Foundation. Open Door Arts is a nonprofit organization which partners teaching artists with BPS (Boston Public Schools) to provide supplementary art educational programs for special need students. Read More

For children my teaching style is very reward based, I love stickers so always give them one once they've mastered their song for the week and such. Lots of encouragement and positive feedback and working through the difficult things in a positive manner. For adults I will teach based on you! If you are really looking for a fun hobby with the music we will be more laid back and relaxed with it and can bounce around and learn all sorts of different things! Read More

Upon first meeting me students I like to do an informal lesson to evaluate where they are in terms of technique on their instrument, knowledge of music fundamentals (harmony, theory and rhythm). At the beginning of each lesson I believe it's important to talk about what each student has been able to work on from the lesson before and each lesson ending in goals we would like to accomplish for the next meeting. The reason a student desires lessons is because they at some point, began to develop a passion for music. Through lessons, I hope to help that passion blossom and teach that student how to best express themselves through music. My teaching style again goes back to finding out what and how the student wants to learn. Fitting the standard curriculum doesn't work for some students, a teacher has to be able to be flexible when it comes to teaching different students. Read More

A principle that I have lived by in the 45 plus years that I have taught, is that I am teaching the STUDENT as an individual with a particular personality, learning style, level of patience, tolerance for making mistakes and openness to trying new things. I do not teach MUSIC; I use it as the vehicle for learning. When a teacher really understands the nature of the student and shows his/her commitment to making every lesson a successful and happy experience for him/her, then the process of learning to play an instrument becomes a mutual and fulfilling experience. As an educator, I am flexible, patient, positive and fun-loving, and strive to engage each and every student. I want each student to move at a pace that is comfortable for them, and want to ensure that there are no learning gaps or plateaus in understanding of content before encouraging a student to move on. I love when a student leaves a lesson with a smile on their face and when they are truly having fun with music- I know I did my job well. Read More
