Instruments: Trombone
My teaching experience goes back to my student days and Juilliard. Even then, passing on the excitement and passion for music and the skills needed to perform. Since then I have developed my ideas of teaching which are focused on execution and steady musical progress, not restricted by the use of a single method book. Read More

My teaching experience starts even while I was in high school. I would volunteer to help the middle school band students to coach them and get them ready for competitions. I also volunteered with the Seattle Music Partners where we went into schools that lost their music program and we taught students after school as their only means of connection to this art in schools. While in college I was a co-coordinator and participant in a Music Mentor Program where we took college students and matched them with students from the local middle school in Oberlin. Read More

My methods used for piano students are the Randall and Nancy Faber teaching books; they are among the very best teaching materials due to their ease of comprehension, their logical sequence of concepts taught, and also their practical exercises and songs for the student. My methods used for Band instruments (trumpet, clarinet, flute, drums, and trombone), are the Standard of Excellence books, as they are also among the very best in regards to explaining musical concepts, presenting new songs, and logical progression. Instruments: Piano Guitar Trombone
I believe that aside from developing a sense of accomplishment and pride in my students, as they improve on their instrument, it is essential that from the beginning they learn to sight read, and this is especially true on the piano. The joy that they derive in their later years, when the lessons stop, when they are able to pick up a piece of music and play it, is invaluable. Read More

During my time at Texas State University, I have been invited to perform at national and international events such as the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the Big 12 Trombone Conference, the Eastern Trombone Workshop and the International Trombone Festival. I have been named finalist for the Eastern Trombone Workshop, the Big 12 Trombone Conference, the Texas State Trombone Symposium, and has won the “Woods/Kone” and Concerto Competition at Texas State University. Instruments: Trombone Euphonium
For students in a beginning band program, I will use whatever method book they are currently using. For students not in a band program I like to use the Rubank Method. To build upon those method books, I like using the Arban book and the Cimera phrasing studies. Because sight reading and ensemble playing are very important to my teaching style, every lesson will begin with a couple duets. It is my goal to help young students build the skills needed to master their band music without my help on it every week. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Essential Elements of Band by Hal Leonard and Tradition of Excellence by Bruce Pearson and Ryan Nowlin. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce more advanced method books such as J.B. Arban: A Complete Method, and various etude books as well as solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Read More
