I taught Elem./Secondary Music for 30 years in IA and CO. As of this writing, I have been teaching private piano lessons for 35 years. I also served as Colorado (CMEA) State Chair of Elem. General Music and directed award-winning children's choirs, even piloting and hosting various regional honor choral music festivals along the way. As beginners, I recommend the first Hal Leonard Essential Elements Band books with EEi. The EEi feature allows students to access online features that coordinate with their private lessons and enhance their ability to learn. As students progress through the book, I add solo repertoire to the student's EEi account so they can both hear it played and record their own performance of each work of band music. Guitar students start with Essential Elements, piano students begin with Piano Adventures/Adult Piano Adventures, and both offer interactive online components which enhance the student's resources and ability to practice and learn between lessons. In teaching young students, I find most success in a repeat-after-me style. It is easiest for students to understand how to create something when supplied with a quality example to mimic. I teach my students the importance of musicality and expression alongside the technical aspects of playing their instrument. If a student is looking to study something particular, such as preparing a solo for a competition, I not only help them work on the piece, but I aim to supply them with successful practice methods as well. My parents are both teachers so I come from a background of educators. I have been teaching for the last 3 years as I was completing my degree at CU Boulder. Even though I am a jazz trombonist, I focus on finding music that students like, not that I personally want to play. I also highly recommend students to write their own music and play it back on trombone as a way to actualize the songs that are playing throughout their lives. Read More
