Whatever instrument private studies we are working on, a balanced approach of performance, literature, theory, and technique are studied. Once the groundwork is established, we even work through composition on their chosen instrument. Students work at their own pace. I have some students who move quite swiftly through their levels, and that is great. Others may need more time, and that is fine. I do find that students who utilize regular and purposeful home practice will tend to get through levels a fair amount quicker. Read More

For beginners, I like to start with the basic fundamentals of the instrument. Brass instruments are notoriously demanding, so making sure we have a solid grasp on the fundamentals is paramount. I like to start with the Essential Elements for Band and the Elementary Method for Cornet and Trumpet books. Once we have the fundamentals, I like to start introducing some solo pieces, jazz, and pop tunes that will allow the student to get a feel for all the music they can play on this instrument! Even though I am a jazz trombonist, I focus on finding music that students like, not that I personally want to play.
