My aim as an instructor is to help each student progress in their own goals an aspirations by adapting and providing the information necessary to be set on a path directed towards his or her individual journey within music. I prefer having a good balance between technical facility of the instrument and the study of the music itself, whether that be in understanding a genres history, improvising and creating music, or transcribing and listening to music within the field of directed study. Most of my time has been consumed performing and learning how to improve as a professional trombonist. During that time I have been performing alongside many great musicians/trombonists. I have taught clinics as a Kanstul Artist as well as coached younger less experienced musicians all of my career as a trombonist. Perhaps due to the teaching environment I grew up in, teaching is in my soul, always has been my passion. Read More

I have been teaching Trombone and Bass to students of all ages for over 15 years and still love giving students the tools and technique to progress and achieve their goals as musicians. Seeing the moment it "clicks" for a student and watching them improve as players and the change that makes in their own image and self confidence is one of the most satisfying aspects of teaching music. My professional career has taken me around the world and allowed me to do and see things I never would have dreamed. Read More

Once the student feels comfortable with the mouthpiece and the long tones, I acquaint the student with fundamentals such as the positions, partials, scales and different types of articulations. For intermediate and advanced students, I focus on repertoire. Applying practices similar to what I have described above, I work with the student on playing repertoire with expression and facility. First I introduce them to short melodies that excercise skills in articulation and phrasing (called "etudes"). Read More

I began teaching at the Xavier University Junior School of Music (Louisiana) at the age of 18. My teaching experience now spans 30 years. While most of my teaching, over the years, has been primarily private, I also have several years of classroom teaching experience. I enjoy teaching music because I believe that it is one of the most endearing methods of sharing information. One of my motto's is that I am an educator first, music is simply the vehicle by which I choose to educate. Read More

My style of teaching seems to be very relaxed. I never force anything and I always want to give inspiration and motivation to the students. I get more pleasure and comfort knowing that this is something they want to do for themselves and not something I or their parents are forcing them to do. I think this also brings out the best playing and create motivation for the student. When I am teaching I give lots of support and even like to play along to give the student confidence and know that this is something that even I would do in my own practice. Read More

I Try to get away from mechanism without joy. Everything has to be close to the music. Exercises to be actually doing them with a rhythm and time. Other than doing things musically, practicing in different times and intentions help a lot for the student to be open to play songs in different ways. Technique and theory are necessary tools. To apply concepts musically they need to do it with musical taste. Read More
