I assign method books, etudes (studies), and repertoire appropriate for the playing level of the student. My teaching emphasizes fundamentals first for students of every level. This fundamental study supports students in their pursuit of their musical and artistic goals. The method books I recommend students begin with are in the Rubank series, either Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Etudes to supplement will be the Cavally Melodious and Progressive studies. After introductions have been made by me and the student, I usually ask a goal of theirs that they would like to accomplish during their studies with me. From there, I usually focus on fundamentals while I try and figure out where they are as a player and cater my instruction to what I discover. I have most students start with Essential Elements for fundamentals. Then I progress to solo and duet repertoire when the time a student is able to grasp counterpoint and rhythm well. Adult students can often move faster due to being able to understand the math behind music. I also try to incorporate theory and history and culture with my lessons.
