Due to the fact that I teach students with drastically different age and ability levels, lessons are catered to each individual student's needs. In general, I try to structure the lesson in such a way that it can serve as a blueprint for at-home practice. We will usually start with some kind of warm-up exercise, move to technical/flexibility development, followed by repertoire and etudes. All students learn at different paces, and I believe it is important that as a teacher, I set realistic goals with my students at each lesson. I am very much a goal-oriented and visual person, so I like to set clear goals for my students. I like to get to know my students personally and create a more open relationship. Some students learn much quicker than others and that is okay! But, I do always encourage my students to progress using proper techniques to prevent burnout and any injuries. I love the flute and the piccolo, and sharing my passion with students. I have a doctorate and a masters in flute performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. I have been on the University of Dayton music faculty since 2015, as Flute Instructor and Director of Flute Ensemble. I have a non-traditional background in science, holding a bachelors in physics from Harvard University. I always make sure they completely understand all that I ask, and listen to their comments and problems they wish to address.
