Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. Our music teachers understand that every student has different needs and abilities and therefore the lessons will be planned with that knowledge in mind.

I have most students start with Essential Elements for fundamentals. Then I progress to solo and duet repertoire when the time a student is able to grasp counterpoint and rhythm well. Adult students can often move faster due to being able to understand the math behind music. I also try to incorporate theory and history and culture with my lessons. For piano, I use Bastien for my younger students and Farber and Bastien for my older students. Read More

For students who are already in an instrumental program through school, I will start with whatever method book they are using at school, and branch off from there. Depending on the instrument, I will bring in another method book specific to that instrument book and we will also use some sort of etude book. The etudes may be classical in nature or more modern music. For older students, I will help them prepare Solo and Ensemble pieces as well. Read More

My approaches change depending on a students age, experience, and personality. Every student is unique and has their own musical language to develop and it is my philosophy that unique students require unique approaches. All of that being said, I utilize lesson time as efficiently as possible to give students the tools they need to progress in their own solo practice. One of my teachers once said "I am only your teacher for an hour each week, that means for 167 hours a week you are your own teacher." For beginners, I favor the Rubank methods. Beginning with intermediate to advanced students, I pull from many different methods and collections, and decide on repertoire based on a custom plan for the student's specific progress. In creating this plan, I select assignments and pieces depending on what the student is drawn to, what they wish to accomplish, and what areas of their playing need more focused work. I always try to look for repertoire that the student can polish in time for an audition/performance/jury, while also serving as a whetting stone for their skills. Read More
