Overview:
I love the flute and the piccolo, and sharing my passion with students. I have a doctorate and a masters in flute performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. I have been on the University of Dayton music faculty since 2015, as Flute Instructor and Director of Flute Ensemble. I have a non-traditional background in science, holding a bachelors in physics from Harvard University. My mission as your flute teacher is to help you achieve whatever goals you have, to the very best of your ability.
EXPERIENCE
I remember teaching my first sectionals in high school as an upperclassman to my fellow classmates. I've been hooked on the thrill of helping someone succeed ever since. I have since developed my own flute studio, with students ranging in age from 8 to adults, and all abilities, from beginners putting the flute together for the first time, to college music majors. I like to establish good fundamentals, and explain to each and every student exactly why I'm having them do something, and set clear goals in order to achieve whatever personal goals the student has for themselves and the flute.
METHODS USED
For beginners, I favor the Rubank methods. Beginning with intermediate to advanced students, I pull from many different methods and collections, and decide on repertoire based on a custom plan for the student's specific progress. In creating this plan, I select assignments and pieces depending on what the student is drawn to, what they wish to accomplish, and what areas of their playing need more focused work. I always try to look for repertoire that the student can polish in time for an audition/performance/jury, while also serving as a whetting stone for their skills.
