ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BM, Bowling Green State University, Music Education-Instrumental (euphonium focus)
Overview:
I am a passionate and patient instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I graduated from Bowling Green State University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Music Education, with a focus on Euphonium. I have worked as a long term sub in middle school band and have taught privately since that time. I currently work outside the education field, but still enjoy sharing music with those who want to learn. I am able to teach in my home or I can  travel to you.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching privately as a high school student, working with begnning students at the middle school. I have taught privately in my home and in students' homes since graduating from college. Regular practice is very important and something I emphasize with my students. I like to include a mixture of classical and modern music in my lessons, so that students enjoy what they are learning and playing. If a student does not enjoy their time playing their instrument, they will not want to put the practice in and lessons will become a point of argument.
METHODS USED
For students who are already in an instrumental program through school, I will start with whatever method book they are using at school, and branch off from there. Depending on the instrument, I will bring in another method book specific to that instrument book and we will also use some sort of etude book. The etudes may be classical in nature or more modern music. For older students, I will help them prepare Solo and Ensemble pieces as well. I include theory in my lessons and will tailor the theory to make it relevant to what they are currently working on in their large group. I also encourage my students to listen to recordings of professional performances on their chosen instrument to hear examples of good tone and technique. We will do some of this in our lessons and discuss what we hear.
LESSON STYLE
I am a patient teacher and encourge students to work at their own pace. If we need to spend more time on a certain concept or technique than one lesson allows, we will. I want to make sure that they understand throroughly before moving on to the next concept. At the same time, I want my students to feel challenged in their lessons so that they will be willing to go home and put the work in during their practice time. I will try to find out what inspires each student and tailor my instruction to their individual wants and needs.
