I am a fairly new teacher but since completing my degree in May of 2015 I have already began to build a private studio as well as teach at a few local music schools. I believe that in order to truly understand an instrument, practice must take place nearly everyday. In lessons, I teach students how to practice by creating short goals that add up to long-term progress. For younger students, I find it helpful to treat these goals as games in order to make practicing feel fun as opposed to feeling like work. Read More

I like to make sure the learning environment is stress free and nonthreatening. I believe the psychology of music is dynamic. My goal is to get teacher and student to always be sensitive to the affective attributes that music has on the listener and the performer. Music comes alive by the interpretation of the performer and the student has the power to transmit his or her passion on any particular piece of music. Read More

Out of countless saxophonists in the state, I was one of two tenor saxophonists chosen to perform in the district, region, and all-state wind ensembles and the only musician to be regaled the PMEA Richard Merrell Band Scholarship. In the jazz realm, my high school jazz ensemble auditioned and was chosen to be the only high school ensemble to perform at the 2015 PMEA state conference. With such a variety of music education and performance experiences, I was ready to continue my music education at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, an undergraduate program I chose specifically to study with Grammy nominated Ralph Bowen, known in the jazz world as a gifted educator. I'm a recent graduate from Moravian College, class of 2019 with a degree in Music. I've spend years performing in local bands before starting my degree. In college, I was the lead alto saxophone in the BIG BAND as well as Wind Ensemble. I've had experience playing around the work, participating in the Karel Velebný Summer Jazz Workshop in Frýdlant, Czech Republic. I've also had college experience playing in classical guitar in the Guitar Ensemble, and electric/acoustic guitar in various rock groups and one time gigs. Read More

My experiences as a musician include performing in both classical and jazz groups. I play classical music every day and I like for my students to study a classical piece because it helps them develop technique rapidly. As a keyboard player, I emphasize the study of scales and arpeggios and playing them with both hands. Reading music and understanding music theory gives the student more independence to study and practice on their own. Read More

For beginner flute and sax students, I like to work out of the Standard of Excellence Books, and for beginner piano I like to use Bastien Series books. I have used these books in my development and am very comfortable and confident with their ability to help studnets progress. Once my students reach a level where they have a pretty solid understanding of music, I start to give them more freedom into choosing what they want to do. Read More

From there we learn simple songs -- sometimes by ear, and sometimes by reading music (both are valuable skills to have). From there we learn how those songs we learned are built. This is the theory part. Once a student has a rudimental understanding of theory they can begin to compose their own songs! When this is done spontaneously people refer to it as improvisation, but don't let the names fool you. Read More
