For beginning students I typically start with an elementary band method (Yamaha, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, etc..). We focus on basic tone production, finger technique, note reading, and playing simple songs. Once the student is comfortable we begin to work out of a duet book. This gives the student a chance to "perform" with me at each lesson, tends to accelerate progress, and is fun! Although it is important that my students progress at their own pace, I suggest practicing as many 20 minute sessions possible daily, for research has shown that the mind can concentrate most clearly for that length of time. My lessons include Music Theory, Ear Training and Rhythmic Studies in order to save lots of time, by nurturing excellent Musicianship, in addition to learning the instrument, through practicing correctly. I use a variety of published methods depending on the age of the student and their current level.  I prefer Rubank's method books as they are a little more challenging. They include simplified melodies and examples from classical literature. I may not begin with Rubank for the very young but my goal is to lead them up to that publisher within the first year. I always bring one of my instruments so I can play along and teach by example. it is import the young student learns good posture and breathing technique early on as it will contribute to a more successful beginning.
