Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet Recorder
I am a professional multi-instrumentalist in both jazz and classical music. I have been teaching for over 45 years. I have played jazz on both coasts (and Chicago) and have performed in chamber ensembles in New York and New England, playing music from the Renaissance as well as more standard repertoire. After earning my degree in composition, which I earned while working as a musician, I fell in love with music before 1750, learned the instruments and techniques to perform it properly and got my MA. I have been teaching music lessons in schools and privately since 1994. I currently teach elementary general music and 4th/5th grade band lessons in a Brooklyn public school-the New York City Department of Education. Before 2012, I was a travelling teacher employed by Paul Effman Music Service to serve Catholic Schools in the Diocese Of Brooklyn. --My goal as a music teacher has always been to encourage children to love music from childhood to the latest years of their lives. My number one goal is to meet the student where they are at!--and we go on up from there. I like to develop a relationship with my students in which there is a shared responsibility. On my part, I will provide the necessary resources and guidance that will help them achieve their musical goals. Their part only requires a simple curiosity and willingness to learn something new along with a focused work ethic to put their newfound skills into practice! Read More
Instruments: Piano Saxophone Clarinet
My relationship with music making began at the age of 7 when I begrudgingly agreed to take piano lessons at the nudging of my parents. In the first lesson, my teacher taught me the theme from The Simpsons, and I was sold. It would be years before I would actually become competent at turning notes on a page into something musically expressive, but that day I went home knowing I had found something special, and that inertia has carried me to where I am today. Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet Recorder Bassoon
I have taught private lessons for 9 years, and I can proudly say that the majority of my students were accepted either to middle and high school honor ensembles, or to their colleges of choice. Before I teach any student, I make it my goal to gather as much information as I can about why they wish to study clarinet, their goals, and their long-term dreams. My job is to help those dreams happen, so I keep a database of this information to consistently reference during my time with my students. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice Saxophone Flute Clarinet Ukulele Oboe Bassoon English Horn Keyboard
I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument. Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I have been teaching for 5 years in both private lesson situations and and group lesson situations. I enjoy teaching beginner piano and flute and teaching all levels on the clarinet and saxophones. I have taught in both the classical and jazz idioms. I have taught as young as seven and as old as seventh and I enjoy seeing what curious students bring to the lesson. I teach both by ear and reading music. Read More
