Whether it be to yourself, someone you want to sound like, or your favorite band, the best way to focus your efforts while learning is to know who you want to sound like and what kind of music you want to make. From there, everything else falls into place. There's no use spending long hours practicing techniques and exercises and scale patterns if it's not serving the purpose of helping you achieve your goals and if it's not helping you have fun playing music.
