Kellon is a staple of the NYC music scene. He has performed with rising artists from every genre at venues including Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, 54 Below, Provincetown Playhouse, and Nublu 151. A passionate educator, Kellon has has taught music in after school programs, worked as a band technician, given collegiate masterclasses, and worked as a lesson instructor with both children and adults. I like my lessons to be fun! I like to start my lesson with a "music swap": we each play one minute of a song that we found that week from youtube or spotify and take 30-60 seconds to say why we found it interesting or inspiring (it can be any genre). We then aim to discuss and practice a new technical skill and use exercises to develop it, we work on a song from the method series or a song that the student wants to work on (I often transpose pop/rock songs for my students), and then rhythm training, ear training, and music theory concepts are interspersed throughout. He considers himself an improviser, coalescing his range of influences into a unified sonic vocabulary that can be incorporated across genre and medium. Navarro is a part of the liberation-oriented free jazz collective, Irreversible Entanglements. After their highly acclaimed self-titled debut album on International Anthem, a second album is due to be released in 2020. Navarro also has a duo project with Brooklyn-based drummer Tcheser Holmes. I mix in ear-training with all of my students through different ways of connecting them to the music. I believe that in order to engage a student in the learning process, goals must be clear. I begin by asking new students what they want to learn. Many students are not sure what they want to learn, and this is to be expected. In this case, some trial-and-error is necessary; if a student is bored by Bach, maybe its time to see how he/she can relate to learning a simple tune by ear maybe a jazz tune like Summertime, or maybe the latest single on the radio.
