I know each student is different in terms of learning style and musical goals. I make it a priority to keep the student's best interest in mind when giving assignments and setting weekly goals for practicing. The most important thing I want to leave the student with is a sense of fascination and appreciation for music. Whether an interest in classical or country music, I can transform any material into a learning opportunity that is fun, educational, and progressive for the student's musical and technical development. My teaching methods depend on the instrument, age and experience of the student, and the goals for the lessons. Every student will develop a solid base of fundamentals and music reading that grows into study of a variety of styles of music. Read More

Nothing compares to the feeling you get when you see your pupils happily growing and accomplishing every goal they set up for themselves. Since everyone is unique and works at their own pace, I don't think it's fair to approach every student the same way. I enjoy being outdoors and hiking, biking, canoeing and camping. I do have a cat, so if you are severely allergic, this is important for you to know. (I used to be allergic myself till I switched to a mainly vegan diet, so I know how sick you can get even if the cat is not in the room at the time.) I have lived in Olympia since July. My spouse works at the State Capitol and my two sons live in Enumclaw and Auburn. Read More

For beginning brass players I generally start out with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements series of books. After going through that, with some other material on the side, such as performance pieces, etc, they would progress to the Arban book (at around high school age for the student who began in sixth grade, as I did). For piano, I much prefer starting out with basic fundamentals, but not to any specific method, in contrast to brass. Read More

I have been a performing and teaching professional for over 25 years and released over 20 albums with many different artists. Since I was in my early twenties, I have performed throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Central America. I bring my experience to the lesson room through a thorough and varied approach to harmony, technique, sight-reading, improvisation and performance techniques. Acoustic and electric bass are my primary instruments, but I teach to advanced level on guitar and ukulele, beginning piano, and in multiple genres of music. Read More
