Overview:
Music is my life, and I love to share my passion with others! I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1997, majoring in Music Production and Engineering and Voice. I have been producing music for 20 years, and I have been teaching voice and piano off and on for 18 years. I am a singer songwriter, and I play with my band every other week. Some of my other current paid jobs include producing cultural music, singing back-up vocals for a local artist, and teaching for Tacoma Public Schools.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching piano and voice lessons in 1996 when I was a college student. I was trained to teach by the director of Studio 90 Music School in Massachusetts. I then went on to acquire my own students, and travelled around the greater Boston area teaching children and adults in their homes. I have also taught out of many local music stores. In 2009 I went back to school for Early Care and Education, which has greatly enhanced my skills and passion for teaching younger children. My goal for each student is to spark their passion for music, playing and singing songs and styles that they enjoy.
METHODS USED
When I teach teenagers or adults I usually start with Alred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Book, as well as a music theory book that is suited to the student. I like Alfred’s series for the young beginner as well, but have also used the Bastien series. For voice students I use a warm up book and a sight singing book. My students keep a music notebook of the week’s assignments in which I also make music theory notes and explanations. In addition to the instruction books, I find out particular songs that the student would like to learn and include them in the lesson. If the student wants to compose music, I also teach songwriting skills, and playing by ear.
LESSON STYLE
I have a friendly and laid back teaching style, maintaining student/teacher professionalism. How much or how fast the student learns depends a lot on how much they practice. For younger students I use stickers as rewards to help motivate them. I adapt to the student when it comes to the style of music we play or sing. Occasionally we may play or sing duets. I know the student will continue to want to learn if they have fun during the lesson, so that is what I strive for!
