Once the student has reached a comfortable level of confidence, I introduce Charles Duncan’s follow up book, Classical Guitar Repertoire: A Graded Anthology of Solo Pieces. It’s a great start for the fledgling soloist. For intermediate and advance I use a wide variety of methods. My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. I immediately slow the student down and concentrate on just a measure or even two notes to accomplish correct rhythm, fingerings, articulations and phrasing. Some students will pick up a technique or a piece of music in one week, while another might struggle with the same piece for a whole month, and that's okay! Once basic theory is introduced, I look for music that I hope the student will enjoy playing. I know that there is music I love to play and music I would rather not play.
