For about 5 years I taught at a program called "Be Natural Music" where all of the students were children and teens. We put together kid rock bands and had them play shows a few times a year at local venues and festivals. I was the resident drum teacher for that program until my very recent move to New York. I engage the students in lively conversations about music, I usually engage the students in conversations how school or work is going, and then relate these conversations to their practice at home time. When I need to give specific instructions, I experiment with different methods, such as exercises that heighten aural awareness, mental image examples, or physical movements. One goal is to bring awareness of as many different sounds as I help them hear. I believe in acknowledging improvement and mentioning specific positive feedback. I also try to adapt lesson plans to the goals of the student, while trying to push them further. Read More
