It is of upmost importance that educators prepare students to be highfunctioning members of society when they leave the sheltered environment of school, regardless of what their roles or vocations may be. The biggest gift we can give our students is an education that is student-centered. In order for students to learn, they must be involved in their own education and have a say in what they are learning and how they learn and demonstrate that learning. Read More

After completing both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees at that school, I continued with my doctoral studies at Cornell University. There, I continued to teach music theory and aural skills classes, and taught beginner music students the fundamentals of notation. After my graduation in 2015, I went on to become Assistant Professor of Music at the Conservatory of Ipek University, in Ankara, Turkey. At the conservatory, I taught piano, music theory, counterpoint, and composition. Read More

As a teacher I try to inspire my students. Whether its playing a song for them to motivate them, breaking things down to the most simple element, I approach teaching in a pragmatic way. Everyone is a little different when it comes to learning, so my job is to somewhat cater the lesson to the student in order that they get the most out of it. I encourage students to practice and I follow up on the assignments given. Read More

My teaching style is very "go with the flow." Each day is a new opportunity to learn a little more about music and your chosen instrument. Each lesson is a time where we can delve deeply into one piece of music, or jump around to several different topics. Of course, there is always room for structure and I make sure that we stay on track! There are so many different aspects of each instrument to cover, but there no need to get bogged down with complicated acronyms and over complex methodology. Read More

I began my teaching career almost 20 years ago at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. While I was there, I worked with students of all ages and levels of playing ability. From that experience, I was able to not only develop a teaching method, but also to adapt and adjust that teaching method to accommodate for each student's unique personality and learning style. During my time there, I wanted to incorporate musical concepts that I learned from playing tablas in my lessons with drum set students. Read More

As an instructor, its important to me that my students are developing both their skills and their love for music at an equal rate. I do this by assigning exercises and material that will be both rewarding and fun for the student. I also set timely goals so that they have something to look forward to in their next lesson. During my lessons, I also do a lot of mirroring (showing how I play a certain passage with my instrument) so that they can visualize the proper implementation of a passage. Read More
