I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Each student is provided a weekly practice journal. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I have about 15 years of experience playing the piano and I have learned the other brass instruments out of necessity for my music degree. I can teach trombone and piano at all levels and can teach trumpet, horn, and euphonium to the intermediate level. I always encourage regular practice. My approach to teaching is centered around whether the student is having fun. My goal is never to force anyone to become a professional in our lessons. If you want to get to that level I can certainly help, but I am more concerned about having fun playing trumpet and piano. We will do a lot of listening homework as well, since listening is just as important as playing.
