I teach in a fun and customized way. Since I have taught for almost 15 years from Kindergarten to adults, I use a simple language in order to explain the fundamentals of Technic. I've been a full-time music teacher and performer in the late 1970s. I've studied with some of the top teachers in the world including Aaron Shear at NC School of Arts who I helped publish his last series of books with Mel Bay. As well as teaching college level guitar and music courses, I have taught an average of 70 students a week for 15 years during the 1990s and early 2000s. Read More
Instruments: Piano Saxophone
For beginning students I focus on the fundamentals of playing a saxophone: Setting up your instrument, reading music, breath training, and embouchure. Once the student progresses to a bit higher level, we start with rudimentary songs that allow the student to work on playing full songs. For more musically experienced students new to saxophone, I still start with the same foundational training and set up, but have a more rapid approach to having them play full songs in genre's they enjoy. My teaching style is always based around engagement. Letting the student select what he/she wants to learn is paramount to any style of study. I have found that my best teachers played as much as i did during lessons, and not just played but really showed their passion for playing! This is very important to show a student. You only have more and more fun the more you play. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
My method makes understanding the breathing, support and execution of the voice the first priority. After this is achieved, exercises are assigned to further develop range, control, strength and vocal agility. The bottom line is that although it takes years to develop a strong, skillful and sensitive singer, it should not take years for a singer with good tutelage and a willingness to work hard, to sing competently. So without the ability of the student to make a good tone and control the voice, all the exercise cds and books are useless. Read More

I talk to them about my experience with music, how i became aware at their age how music made me feel and how it made other people feel: happy, sad, excited, feel like dancing etcetera. I ask if they know what I mean. I talk in a low voice unless I get excited about an accomplishment. I try things to make them laugh. I brag about kids to their parents. i encourage them to practice without scolding, I like to say Ive been doing this a long time and I know when my students aren't practicing. Read More
