For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I typically use a combination of methods in the private lesson setting-method books, etude books, books for technique, solo repertoire, and pop/rock/jazz music and or charts for contemporary study. For beginners, I like Essential Elements 2000, Faber Method, Suzuki solo books, and easy pop music books. I talk to them about my experience with music, how i became aware at their age how music made me feel and how it made other people feel: happy, sad, excited, feel like dancing etcetera. I ask if they know what I mean. I talk in a low voice unless I get excited about an accomplishment. I try things to make them laugh. In 2010 I taught senior citizens how to play the steelpan for 2 years (Independence Village White Lake, MI) and prepared them for a performance, in 2012 I taught basic percussion skills for a through a homeschool co-op for one semester (Troy, Michigan) and in the past three years, I've taught private drum set and piano lessons to students ranging from 7-40 years old.
