I have great appreciation for music and the art of teaching. I began teaching music at a very young age, and instantly knew that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. After receiving my Associate degree, I began studying Music Education at Florida Atlantic University. Currently I am just a couple of semesters away from receiving my Bachelor of Music Education degree. I can't wait to share my knowledge and experience with others, and gain even more expeience along the way. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 15 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical, gospel, christian, jazz and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. I have found that my best teachers played as much as i did during lessons, and not just played but really showed their passion for playing! This is very important to show a student. You only have more and more fun the more you play. Read More

Music in the school system is taught backwards. If you're a beginner, you were put in a beginning class. this makes it very difficult for students to advance quickly because they aren't playing music with people who are more advanced than them. I make sure the students have the ability to play the instrument before they learn a ton of theory, because knowing how the wrritten form of music work without being able to play them is recipe for frustration. After finishing college and meeting so many artists seeking help I founded The Gene Townsel Studio of Theatrical and Musical Arts where such artists as "Scat Man" Crothers and Marques Houston of "Immature" now "IMX" were regular clients. As a vocal coach/teacher to professional and aspiring artists for over 40 years, I have used my experience as an Internationally Acclaimed Singer and his formal training (Florida AM University) as a vocal music major, to help my students develop the tools necessary to be competitive in the industry.
