I have been teaching piano for nearly ten years now. I know that every person is different and that there is not one right way to teach or to learn. I work to find things that work best for each student. I believe that reading music is a very important cornerstone in learning to play an instrument. Once we have achieved decent proficiency in it, I like to branch out beyond a basic method book into learning music chosen by my students because practicing is a lot more fun, and therefore more likely to happen regularly, if we're working on music that is fun as well as educational. I am a passionate musician, educator, conductor, and composer, and I have been happily obsessed with music since I began piano lessons at age 10. I joined the school band program in 6th grade, and since then, I have learned how to play and teach many different instruments. My primary instrument is percussion, but I play piano, low brass, clarinet, bass guitar, and I also have perfect pitch. For young beginners I start with a wonderful method book called "Progressive Piano method for young beginners". It begins with note reading which I feel is one of the most important parts of beginner piano playing. The book includes a play-along cd that I use for rhythm practice during lessons to clap and count, because having a steady rhythm is the second most important aspect of playing the piano. Lessons include a mixture of reading and playing music from the book, clapping and counting, flashcards, and musical games. Read More
